Nations’ Top Athletes Shine at 2010 Simplot Games

by Tyler Gibbons

One national class record and two meet records fall; numerous top U.S. marks set

The Nation’s premier indoor track and field event is a venue where the best high school athletes come to test their mettle against the best – the best competition, the best environment, and the best atmosphere.

The distinctive and unique Simplot Games produces plenty of excitement from the all involved, but especially the athletes.

A year after shattering the national freshman record in the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Trinity Wilson, from Oakland, Calif., returned to Pocatello with the same intentions.

Mission accomplished.

“I just brought everything that I’ve been working on in practice to the race,” Wilson said. “And I got it done.”

Wilson won the hurdle event in a national sophomore record 8.29 seconds.

“I always tell people Simplot’s my favorite meet,” Wilson said. “From now on, if something will ever go down it’s going to happen right here at Simplot.”

Only a sophomore, there is no telling what she has in store for Simplot in the next two years. An extremely scary thought for the rest of the field.

“I’m going to keep practicing and keep working,” Wilson said. “When next year comes around, watch out. I’ll be ready.”

Other top performances from Saturday’s finals include:

· Fuqauwn Greene, a senior from New Bern, N.C., set a new Simplot Games record in the 200 meters with a time of 21.41.

· Throw1 Deep’s Shelby Ashe, a junior from Marietta, Ga., set a new Simplot Games weight throw record with a toss of 60’5”, the fifth best high school throw of all-time.

· Kasen Covington (senior from Boise, Idaho) the top ranked high school triple jumper in the U.S. won both the long jump (23’ 6”), and triple jump (48’ 0-1/4”).

· Ashton Purvis (senior from Oakland, Calif.,) the nation’s top girls sprinter, completed her Simplot 3-peat. For the third year in a row, Purvis left Pocatello with victories in the 60- (7.36 seconds), and 200-meter dashes 23.54).

· Kelsey Brown (senior from Orem, Utah) recorded the fastest time in the nation for the girls’ 800 meters with a time of 2:11.04

· Georgia’s Throw1 Deep was well represented on the podium, claiming all 12 places on the girls’ and boys’ weight throw division, along several medallists in the boys’ shot put (including the Davis Fraker, who won the boys’ weight throw and shot put).

· Zach Blackham, a senior from Orem, Utah, matched the third best high jump in the nation this year (6’10”) while winning the high jump with some encouragement from Olympic legend Dick Fosbury.

· Tara Richmond, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., swept the high jump, (5’8”), and triple jump, (38’3”).

· Chris Mamon, a senior from Fairfield, Calif., won the boys 60-meter hurdles with the sixth best time in the country this year (8.01).

Gem State has strong showing at nation’s premier indoor event

With two wins by a Boise senior, a front-running win in the 3200-meters by a senior from Hailey, and two wins in the all-Idaho relay by teams from Boise and Pocatello, Idaho athletes demonstrated their mettle on the nation’s fast track.

Boise’s Kasen Covington won the triple jump and long jump this year, adding to the triple jump title he won last year.

Covington had a rough start by fouling on his first two attempts.

“I usually don’t foul that much, I had to go back to the basics,” said Covington. “I love the Simplot Games, it’s a great meet to come and compete at.”

Chase Caulkins a senior from Hailey, won the 3200-meter run – a race of pure endurance and dedication that he led from the start.

“I told myself to keep attacking,” Caulkins said. “I kept pumping my arms and moving my legs so I couldn’t be caught from behind.”

In the relays, YMCA Team Idaho’s girl’s relay team won in the All-Idaho 4x200 relay.

“It’s awesome! The Simplot Games are ‘it,’” said Jensen

On the boys’ side of the All-Idaho relays, Pocatello’s Indian Track Club also came out victorious with a win in the 4x200.

by Jason Bohne

Chase Caulkins, a senior from Hailey, Idaho, won the 3200-meter event at the 32nd annual Simplot Games. He won with a time of 9:27.04.

Caulkins broke away from the pack early and never relinquished the lead. Running from the front of the pack, however, wasn’t necessarily his strategy.

“I just wanted to run my pace,” he said. "And no one else was running as fast as I wanted to run."

As he continued to complete the 16-lap event, the toll of the altitude and the pace began to catch up.

“I was feeling the altitude quite a bit with about 800 meters to go,” he said. “I was just thinking, ‘keep going.’ I told myself to keep pumping my arms and keep my legs moving.”

His determination left no doubt to the outcome as he topped second place finisher Steve Morrin of Alpine, Utah, by two seconds.

This was Caulkins’ second Simplot Games. Last year he narrowly missed qualifying for finals.

Boise’s Covington ready for the Simplot Games finals

By Spencer Ward

Overcoming disappointment pushes Covington to bring his game to the next level

Pocatello, Idaho- Kasen Covington is ready to succeed in the finals at the 2010 Simplot Games.

After facing disappointment with the news in 2009 that he would not be attending the Youth World Championships in Italy, Covington became more determined and motivated to bring his performance to the next level.

Covington, the top ranked triple jumper in the U.S. this year, is the favorite to win the Simplot Games triple jump again this year.

“Simplot is a great meet, I love it, I look forward to it every indoor season. You get great competition and a great track; it’s a great atmosphere,” says Covington, who competes for YMCA Team Idaho.

A senior, Covington has signed with the University of Washington, where he hopes to continue to succeed. He hopes to find himself running circuits in Europe and eventually representing his country at the Olympics.

But first comes today’s Simplot Games finals, a hop, skip, and jump toward the future.

Tyrell Yardley Down But Not Out

By Clayton Cook

When Tyrell Yardley, from Syracuse, Utah, came to the 2010 Simplot Games, he was greeted with high expectations from pretty much everybody who has ever seen him run. Yardley was returning off his fourth place finish in the 60-meter race in 2009. Also, shortly after the games last year he set the all-time Utah record in the 200-meter race with a time of 21.15.

“I came back because I wanted to win the 400,” said Yardley.

That dream came to a screeching halt Friday morning when Yardley tore his hamstring while winning his 400-meter heat. Yardley was not only forced to scratch from his 60-meter heat later that day, but forego the rest of the competition completely.

Yardley described the injury as “disappointing but not heartbreaking.”

With Yardley’s record time in the 200 and Utah’s second best times ever in the 400 and 100, he is among the best sprinters ever to come from the state of Utah. Although he says Utah has some great runners, Yardley admits he enjoys competing against the best competition in the nation, which the Simplot Games bring every year. “I really enjoy the competition of the Simplot Games,” said Yardley.

Although Yardley won’t be able to finish he career properly by winning the Simplot Games, he still has a huge track and field future in front of him. After recently signing with Brigham Young University on February 3, he will compete one year for the Cougars before going on his LDS mission, and he plans on returning back to BYU for the remainder of his three years after.

“It should be fun,” said Yardley, who gives credit to his high school coach for his success, and looks forward to working with BYU’s staff. “They have coaches specialized for each event, which will allow for more one-on-one time with me and the coaches.”

Although Yardley will be “icing up and cheering on teammates” for the rest of the competition, there is still plenty of action to watch on Saturday as the 2010 Simplot Games wrap up.

Hot off the press - Trinty Wilson storms Simplot Games

Trinity Wilson, a sophomore, from Oakland, California, ran a 8.44 in the 60-meter hurdles in today's prelims. This is the current U.S. #1 time this year. And she did it in just tennis shoes, no spikes (Simplot Games do not allow spikes in prelims).

So what is she going to do tomorrow in the finals?

She should have a shot at setting the national sophomore class record of 8.38 set by Jasmine Stowers in 2008.

Park City, Utah Coach is a Regular at Simplot Games

by Clayton Cook

Dave Yocum, from Park City, Utah, didn’t fail to make his annual trip North for the Simplot Games this year, even though he only brought one competitor with him. Yocum has been coming to watch the Simplot Games since the early 1980s when he was a member of the Idaho State track team.

“Simplot Games was big then, and it’s even bigger now,” says Yocum.

Yocum’s lone athlete at the 2010 games is Blake Thorne. Thorne will be competing in the boys 60-meter dash later today at 2 p.m.

“I’m a little nervous, but not much,” says Thorne.

Yocum says he hopes and expects Thorne to go under 7.3. He anticipates that being the cutoff to reach the 60-meter final Saturday at 12:25 p.m. As Thorne and the rest of the competitors await their turn, you can follow the 2010 Simplot Games on Facebook and Twitter, or watch live on flotrack.org.

Purvis and Wilson take Simplot Games by storm

When Ashton Purvis came to the 2008 Simplot Games as a sophomore, she stunned the fans who watched her at Holt Arena by not only winning the 60-meter event, but also by winning the 200 meters and setting a national sophomore record of 23.54 seconds. She returned in 2009 to blow away the competition by sweeping the 60- and 200-meter races again.

Purvis, now a senior, is back yet again, and she is ready to impress track fans one more time.

“I’m going out with a bang,” says Purvis. “I’m going for the record.”

Setting a meet record is about the only thing this sprinter from Oakland, Calif., hasn’t done yet at Simplot Games.

It looks like this could be the year for her, too. She is currently ranked first nationally in both the 60-and 200-meter events. This comes to no surprise to Purvis’s coach, Curtis Taylor.

“Ashton has always been the best in her age group,” says Taylor. “It doesn’t matter whether she was in elementary, middle, or high school, she has always been the best.”

Purvis caught the attention of the University of Miami coaches with her exceptional talent, earning a scholarship to compete collegiately for them next fall.

“I’m juiced,” says Purvis, “I want to do it all.”

After all the things she has been able to accomplish so far, it’s hard not to think the University of Miami will be just another stepping stone to a legendary career.

Another rising star not to be overshadowed is Purvis’s younger teammate, Trinity Wilson. This sophomore has already started leaving her own footprints on the Games. As a freshman, Wilson dominated the field in her specialty, the 60-meter hurdles. Wilson came across the finish line last year with a record of her own, the new freshman national record of 8.44 seconds.

Now a year after breaking the freshman national record, Wilson is currently the top-ranked 60-meter high school hurdler in the country.

That makes three events with the top-ranked runner coming from the same school in Oakland, Calif., and soon to be competing at Simplot Games.

And they come to compete in the hopes of earning their spot in the record books. Wilson not only wants to win again, she wants to dominate her opponents.

“I like pressure of being number one,” says Wilson. “I want to win every race, and I don’t want my opponents to feel like they can beat me after.”

The duo from Oakland will surely be nothing short of spectacular this year. It will be a true “spectator sport” inside Holt Arena for Simplot Games as these two athletes and the rest of the competitors continue their own campaigns for greatness.

The Games officially start Thursday, February 18, and go through Saturday, February 20, 2010.

The 32nd Simplot Games is here

The 32nd Simplot Games are being held this weekend, February 18-20, at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena. The annual J.R. Simplot Company-sponsored event has become one of the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field events since it was first held in 1979.

“Athletes look forward to this weekend all winter,” says Rebecca Anderson, Simplot Games Executive Director. “It’s such an excellent way to kick-off the indoor season. Some of the best high school athletes in the country get to take center stage in one of the most unique and beautiful facilities around.”

Idaho State’s distinctive wood track, state-of-the-art timing equipment, and top-notch competition give athletes the motivation and chance to stomp around in record time.

“Athletes pay a huge price to get here,” says Anderson. “They sacrifice an enormous amount of time and effort to get the opportunity to perform at the highest level.”

Although the 2,000 athletes from over 20 different states and Canada who travel to Pocatello come to shine under Holt Arena’s bright lights, the Simplot Games weekend itself is about more than just standing atop a podium.

“But the Games is not all about competition, it is about having fun too,” says Anderson. “And this year is going to be better than ever, with some great new additions.”

The business community will enjoy “Breakfast with Fosbury and Friends.” Coaches and serious athletes get to explore a competitive edge at the Track Academy featuring Brigham Young University Sports Psychologist Ron Chamberlin.

Competitors get the chance to mingle with Olympic legends Dick Fosbury, Andre Phillips, Larry Questad, and Madeline Manning. They will socialize with each other at Simplot Games After Dark, which offers dinner, dancing, and a mechanical bull.

Coaches will be able to mingle with adidas athlete Scott Bauhs, Brett Gotcher, and Coach Greg McMillan over food and beverages at the adidas sponsored Coaches Hospitality Room.

The Games also offers recognition for everyone with the Parade of Athletes, a truly Olympic event.

“The Simplot Games is also unique because it is an open meet, which means athletes do not need a certain qualifying time or distance to be able to complete, says Anderson. “Everyone is welcome at the Games and this allows high school athletes from all over the chance to compete and have fun. It truly makes Simplot Games an extraordinary experience for everyone.”

Plus, admission to the Games is free.

Local business leaders, Simplot employees, and sponsors have been planning for this weekend since last May. The goal: to expose Pocatello’s beauty and hospitality to the influx of people who flood local shops, restaurants, and hotels.

“The community has become supporters of the Games because of the relative ease it is to become a fan,” adds Anderson. “And that wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers who give up so much to put on such an exceptional, first-class event,”

The Games are more than a track meet. It has become a melting pot of young, aspiring individuals and dedicated business people and volunteers who grow, learn, and improve while coming together in the spirit of competition.

“The recipe for the Simplot Games involves coordination, dedication, and hard work by a lot of people,” says Anderson. “When the weekend’s over, only a few take home a medal, but everyone leaves with life-long memories of another incredible Simplot Games experience.”

Don’t miss out on this amazing experience. Make sure Holt Arena is your destination this weekend.

Idaho Athletes to Watch

Again this year, Idaho athletes will look to make their mark at Simplot Games.

The Games gives Idaho’s best a chance to compete at a national event. The following athletes will try to benefit from their home field advantage.

Gate City Track Club

The Gate City Track Club athletes come from Pocatello’s Highland High School.
Among those competing for the club are sophomore Dallen Farnsworth and junior Kaylie Hutichson.

Farnsworth claimed the 2009 state title at 3200 meters, and Hutichson placed 4th at the 2009 Idaho State Cross-Country Championship.

Head Coach Chris Belchar is excited to see how his runners will perform the Games.

“We expect them to do extremely well this year,” say Belchar.

Portneuf Track Club

The Portneuf Track Club athletes come from Pocatello’s Century High School.
It’s competitors include freshman Hannah McInturff, who placed second at the Idaho State Cross-Country Championship.

Also, racing for Portneuf is junior Dylan Lammers, who has received all-State honors in long distance running.

Head Coach Frank Wolfe is looking forward to Simplot Games this year.

“These kids are excited,” says Wolfe. “It’s a great opportunity to be able to compete in the Simplot Games.”

Indian Track Club

The Indian Track Club athletes come from Pocatello High School. Participating this year is Sawyer Jeter, a senior, who place first in the 400 meters and the 4x400-meter relay at the 2009 Idaho State Championship.

Tasha Powell, a sophomore, took third in the shot put at the Idaho State Championships and looks to be competitive at Simplot Games.

Shaw Green, a junior from Indian Track Club, was injured during the 2009 track season but is expected to do well this year as he competes in the 60- and 200 meters.

Other Idaho athletes expected to perform well

As usual, Team YMCA Idaho, located in Boise, is loaded with a lot of talent.

Senior Kasen Covington had an exciting Simplot Games experience last year. On his last jump of the triple jump event, Covington leaped past the competition to win a gold medal with a jump of 49’3”.

Covington improved on each of his attempts in the final round of that event, improving from 47’10” to 48’2 ½” on his second try of the finals, then tacked on nearly 12 more inches to win. He looks to defend his title in 2010.

Three of his teammates placed in events at last year’s Simplot Games:

· Eric Fitspatrick, senior, placed third in the 1600 meters
· Landon Watt, junior, placed third in the 200 meter dash
· Lewis Dawson, senior, placed third in the pole vault

Head Coach Tim Severa is excited to be bringing athletes that work hard and will be competitive.

“We have about 160 kids training, and this is a meet that they look forward to each year,” says Severa.

Andre Phillips comes back to Simplot Games

Andre Phillips, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist in the 400-meter hurdles, is no stranger to Simplot Games, returning for his tenth year.

This year, however, is going to be a little different: he will be bringing the “Hall of Famer” title with him following his recent induction into the USA Track and Field (USATF) Hall of Fame.

“I’m humbled, honored, and proud,” says Phillips of the honor.

Phillips boasts an impressive resume of track accomplishments. Before winning the gold medal, Phillips was the 1981 NCAA champion in the 400-meter-hurdles while competing for UCLA. He also won both the World Cup and the USA Outdoor title in 1985.

Although the World Cup and National titles are great, they don’t carry the same prestige as the Olympic gold that Phillips was able to win in 1988.

To win the gold medal, Phillips had to do something he and every other athlete in the world was unable to do for nearly a decade: beat Edwin Moses.

Moses was deemed unbeatable by many. For nine years, Moses never lost, winning 122 consecutive 400 meter-hurdle races. Phillips, however, was able to get the best of Moses in the 400 meter-hurdle Olympic final in Seoul.

“The first thing that crossed my mind as I crossed the finish line was that I beat Moses,” says Phillips. “I couldn’t believe I beat Moses.”

After looking back, Phillips admits beating Moses was nice, but having the gold medal in his pocket is definitely more important in the long run.

Winning the gold medal puts Phillips in the elite class of USA Track & Field athletes, the class of legends. Along with Phillips, Joetta Clark Diggs (800 meters), Randy Williams (long jump), Willie Steele (long jump), and Dr. Ken Foreman (coach), were the USATF Hall of Fame inductees for the year of 2009.

Phillips is among many Olympians that attend Simplot Games on a regular basis.

“It’s a world class event with world class athletes,” says Phillips. “I enjoy coming out here and watching some of the young blood compete.”

While Phillips enjoys all aspects of the competition, he does admit having a favorite.

“I enjoy watching every event, but the 400-meter hurdles is always going to be close to my heart,” says Phillips.

After 10 years, he has no plans on skipping the Games in the future.

“As long as the people of Pocatello and Simplot Games want me here, I will be here,” says Phillips. “Snow or shine.”
